What's It Like To Run A City? A Conversation With Dan Rich, Mountain View City Manager

In his keynote address, Dan Rich will share both the joys and challenges of his job as City Manager of Mountain View, home to approximately 80,000 residents and numerous well-known companies, including Google, Intuit, and LinkedIn. Dan will speak about some of the tradeoffs he faces every day with policies ranging from jobs and housing to historic preservation and economic development. Dan Rich is the Haas Center for Public Service’s City Manager in Residence for 2018, and this event is presented in partnership with the Bill Lane Center for the American West and Stanford in Government.
About Dan RichDan Rich has been Mountain View’s City Manager since 2011. Prior to arriving in Mountain View, Dan served as City Manager of Campbell for six years. He has served as chair of the Santa Clara County City Managers Association and was a leader in their two-county effort to promote pension reform. He is a member of the League of California Cities’ pension reform task force. Dan has also been active on regional transportation and Next Gen employee development issues. Dan has 30 years of public management experience, including four years in Belmont, nine years in Sunnyvale, and five years working for members of Congress. Dan is a Bay Area native and received his BA from U.C. Berkeley and has a Master’s in Public Policy from Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government.
